Problem :
In the modern digital landscape, communication apps are essential, but they suffer from three core limitations: complete reliance on internet connectivity, privacy risks, and slow performance on startup. When cellular networks or internet connections fail in remote areas or during outages, users are completely cut off from communicating with nearby family and friends. Furthermore, building a communication app that combines real-time calling and chat while ensuring absolute user privacy and instant startup times presents a major engineering hurdle.
Solution :
GupShupGo was built to resolve these limitations by combining high-fidelity calling, strong encryption, and offline resilience.
High-Fidelity Calling: Integrates Agora RTC for HD voice/video calls alongside native call screens (using CallKit) that ring even when the app is closed or the phone is locked.
Offline Messaging: Uses local peer-to-peer mesh networking (Nearby Connections) to allow users to message nearby contacts when the internet is offline.
End-to-End Security: Protects user chat data with the Signal Protocol for industry-standard encryption, with security keys stored in Android Keystore-backed storage.
Rich Messaging & Voice Notes: Includes instant chat messaging with typing indicators, read receipts, and media attachments (compressed images/videos). It also features built-in Voice Messaging with custom playback control.
WhatsApp-Style Statuses (Moments): A complete status system supporting text (with custom backgrounds), photos, and short video updates (under 30 seconds) that auto-expire in 24 hours. Includes view counts, viewer lists, and status replies.
Challenge :
The biggest challenge was managing native VoIP calls across closed or terminated states while ensuring absolute reliability on strict operating systems (such as Xiaomi's MIUI/HyperOS, which aggressively kill background services). To solve this, we designed a serverless architecture using Node.js Firebase Cloud Functions to wake up devices via data-only push notifications. Additionally, seamlessly switching the app between online Firestore sync and offline peer-to-peer mesh networking without disrupting the user experience required precise state management.

GupShupGo successfully delivers a production-grade communication app that rivals mainstream services. By combining high-definition Agora calls, a full-featured chat system (typing indicators, read receipts, voice messages), 24-hour expiring status updates, and premium personalization (custom themes, pro badges, and limits), the project covers the entire scope of a modern social application. Backed by end-to-end Signal Protocol security, offline mesh messaging, and seamless in-app Google Play subscriptions, GupShupGo demonstrates how a local-first, highly scalable, and user-centric communication platform can be built and deployed successfully.
