Problem :

Shared workspaces, public environments, and family computers expose users to significant privacy risks, as sensitive web pages (e.g., online banking, confidential work documents, personal messaging, or corporate dashboards) are left vulnerable to local snooping. Conventional operating system locks are slow, disruptive, and terminate all active tasks.

Furthermore, during screen sharing, video presentations, or temporary remote-desktop access, users frequently expose sensitive background tabs to attendees. Existing tab-locking extensions are either outdated, store credentials insecurely in plain text, or rely on cloud databases that collect user data, defeating the purpose of a privacy utility.

Solution :

Locksy is an open-source, offline-first browser extension providing military-grade tab and domain security. Key features include:

  • Tab & Domain Locking: Secure individual tabs or wildcard domains (e.g., *.google.com) with password protection.

  • Advanced Cryptography: Uses the Web Crypto API with PBKDF2 (600k iterations) and unique cryptographic salts.

  • Biometric Authentication: Supports WebAuthn/FIDO2 with Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, and security keys.

  • Intruder Detection: Captures webcam snapshots after three failed password attempts, storing logs offline.

  • Automation Suite: Supports auto-lock timers, scheduled lock windows, and startup protection.

  • Stealth Mode: Hides extension badges and notifications to keep locked pages discreet.

  • Offline-First Architecture: Operates with zero network permissions, ensuring all data remains local.

Challenge :

  • Manifest V3 Migration: Adapted to Service Worker lifecycle using Chrome Alarms and persistent local storage.

  • Bypass Prevention: Prevented lock circumvention through browser navigation, DOM monitoring, and instant redirection.

  • WebAuthn Integration: Implemented local biometric authentication using the WebAuthn API without a backend.

  • Privacy-First Architecture: Kept all processing offline with zero network requests while supporting site-wide protection.

  • Concurrent Event Handling: Synchronized browser events to prevent race conditions and orphan tab issues.

Summary :

Locksy is a modern, open-source browser extension designed to protect private web pages from local intrusion, shoulder-surfing, and screen-sharing leaks. Built for Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox, it utilizes advanced local cryptography (Web Crypto API, PBKDF2-SHA256 with 600k iterations), native biometric unlock (WebAuthn/FIDO2), and local intruder webcam capture. Operating 100% offline with zero data tracking, Locksy delivers high-performance, customizable tab security that keeps user data private and local.
